Sorry if I sound like a complete noob, but I'm a bit confused. I never had a cell phone, but now I'm thinking about getting an iphone and have a few questions.
* In north america, it's either CDMA or GMS, right?
* The rest of the world are mostly using GMS, right?
* All iPhone 4S have the hardware to use both, right?
I want to be able to change the SIM card when travelling, so I can use my phone without paying the atrocious roaming fees. From what I have gather, you need to unlock the phone in order to do that. You can either do it yourself with a hack, or you can buy one officially unlocked directly from Apple.
* If I go the DIY way, do I have to do this each time I upgrade iOS?
* How easy/risky is it? Are the tool relatively easy to use? Can you point me to some good how-to/reference, when I search about this I get too many suspicious sites.
* is there any other difference I should be aware between the two method?
Lastly, if I buy my phone at full price from Apple, will I be able to get a reduced monthly price from my carrier, since the phone is already paid? I should point out at this time that I'm living in Montreal.
